G.A. Bill Survey

G.A. Bill Survey

Information for this survey was based on 30 random students from Central Michigan University. There were an equal amount of women and men that participated in this survey. The survey asked several different questions relating to a college students obligations and opportunities.

24 out of the 30 students said that master’s degree would be obtainable for their field.
The average amount of time to complete a master’s degree was 7 years.
17 out of the 30 students said they did have some type of job.
The average pay for these students was around $8.50.
The average amount of time a student spends between work and school was 40 hours.
Average monthly expense for these students per month was $733.

The final question was how many of these students were participating in a Registered Student organization.
22 out of the 30 students said that they were not apart of one of the RSO organizations.
The students had pretty much the same reasons why they were not apart of any of these organizations. Here are some of the quotes from the survey on why they are not able to participate in these organizations.

“No, just not interested in any of the organizations”
“No, between school and work; I don’t have much time for extra-curricular activities”
“No, I have no time”
“No, I work too much”
“No, I have to work to be able to afford to go to school”

After coming across this site, I must urge anyone else who stumbles upon it not to support it. I would also like to dissuade you from your standpoint.

First, a survey of 30 students from a campus of 27,768 is hardly representative. If it is accurate, however, it states that 20% (6 out of 30) students would not have any ability to take advantage of this program.

This bill would not keep students from working during college, as it will not cover any living expenses or books. Before taxes, students would need to work 21.5 hours per week just to meet their living expenses. Subtract taxes, add books, and the average student is still going to be working 30 hours per week to make ends meet.

Graduate tuition, at CMU, is 30% higher than undergraduate tuition ($425.00 and $325.00 per credit hours, respectively). This will reduce the number of credits that financial aid can cover for everyone.

Instead of allowing more people to attend college, this plan is restricting it to those who have the opportunity to pursue a master's degree.

The only thing that will make college more affordable for everyone is more money in existing Pell Grants and scholarships, not a plan to restrict existing aid to those who wish to gain advanced degrees.
